Sunnah Living [Taking the first step]

Assalaamu Alaykum girlies (and guys, since this will benefit both genders...I think?) ,

So today's post will not be your standard Al Musaafirah post, rather, today we are going to be talking about my DREEAAAM! Yes yes, i''m always dreaming. Anyways, I stumbled upon this blog recently and the sister was discussing her dream of 'Sunnah living.' She had a list for personal hygiene and beauty, for her home and clothes, and how she wanted to follow the Sunnah as much as possible in these areas. So, that's when I decided to make it my dream also, and hopefully after reading this blog post, you will want to do the same!

One of the areas that caught my eye was the one pertaining to beauty and personal hygiene. Its been quite a while now since I stopped using smelly/perfumed creams, lotions and swapped it with natural Sunnah stuff. The benefits I've witnessed from using these products is what inspired me to write this post. I'm going to list some of the Sunnah products I use and how they've helped and benefited me.

Lets feel beautiful, the Sunnah way! :)

1) Palestinian olive oil - Before I discovered olive oil, I used to be the girl who used to love my body shop products. The perfumed lotions, creams and lip balms did not only  smell incredibly lush, but (I felt) they were also pretty good for my skin. Until, I realised, they were in fact, not. You see, since I'm someone with really dry/ sensitive skin - especially in Winters, using any kind of perfumed, chemical containing products, is literally poison for my skin. So, thats when olive oil came into my life. Not only are olives generally so beneficial for our health, but the olive oil is also so healthy for our skin and hair. After hearing of its religious and health benefits, I practically use olive oil all the time for everything, from my hair to my skin.

[Palestinian olive oil is quite strong, however if you find its OK on your skin, then I highly recommend you continue to use it!]

The Messenger (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: "Eat olive oil and anoint yourselves with it, for it is from a blessed tree." (Tirmidhi At'ima, 43)

And a tree (olive) that springs forth from mount Sinai, that grows oil, and (it is a) relish for eaters." [Surah al-Muminoon 23:20].

So, some benefits:

- It makes the perfect moisturiser! - Oilve oil is amazingly moisturising and perfect for dry scaly skin.
- It makes your skin glow - Olive oil gives your face a nice shine. Who needs all these weird, glowy products when you have it in a bottle of olive oil!
- It contains anti-oxidants - Olive oil can fight skin infections! I had an ulcer in my mouth the other day and after a applying some olive oil on the burning area, I woke up the next day to find it had gone, Alhamdulilah!
- Olive oil is really good if you are suffering from evil eye, possession or effects of black magic. Many Raqi's recommend it to their clients.

2) Ithmid - I call this the natural, sunnah eyeliner! Itihmid is antimony, or more commonly known as Kohl. It is a fine, dark, shiny stone which is grounded into a bottle and should be applied to the wet line of the eye. Ithmid also has benefits! Not surprising, since it is something that the Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) used, and we too should feel motivated to follow in his footsteps. Bear in mind, so many people will sell improper versions of Ithmid so if someone would like to order some, I know some sisters who sell the proper version.

The benefits?

Those who dream of long eyelashes, you need to look no further. :)

"Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam said: 'Use kuhl made of ithmid on the eye; it brightens the eyesight, and strengthens and increases the growth of the eye lashes'. [Tirmidhi]

3) Miswaak - This twig that has amazing benefits. I went through a period where I stopped using toothpaste altogether and only used the Miswaak. I found that using the Miswaak not help me keep connected to the Sunnah but also made my teeth feel a lot stronger and stay a lot cleaner throughout the day. The benefits of Miswaak is that it helps remove bad odour from the mouth, it strengthens the teeth and gums and also prevents tooth decay. It is said that the siwaak also helps the digestive system as well as causes the teeth to glow! And Allah knows best. Of course, the greatest benefit of these Sunnah products is that it gains the pleasure of Allah and we are rewarded for every time we use it!

The great importance and benefit of using the Miswaak is highlighted in the following of Hadith:

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said, "Had I not thought it difficult for my Ummah, I would have commanded them to use the Miswak (tooth-stick) before every Salat.''

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

4) Blackseed Oil - My favourite-est oil in the world. Blackseed oil, personally, has benefited me so much, Alhamdulilah! When I have a belly-ache I try to always rub some olive oil on my stomach, if I've hurt myself then I will also apply this. And you know what, its works every time, SubhanAllah. It is particularly helpful if you have a cold as it makes you feel quite warm when applied. It is no surprise then that the Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said:

Aisha (ra) said that she heard the Messenger (saw) say, "This black seed is a cure for every disease except death. " [Saheeh al-Bukharee (5687)].

Note: The Prophet (Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam) mentioned BLACKSEED in particular, however the oil also also has many benefits which you can read about.

5) Musk - Who needs perfume when you have natural perfumed extracted from the deer? Yes, real musk is extracted from a deer. Cool right? :) Musk is not only beautifully smelling but it too has benefits, such as recently, it has been discovered that musk is a natural antibiotic for treating skin and gentile disease. It is also recommended for women to apply musk, after their menses as Aisha (ra) said that Asthma (ra) asked Rasulullah (salallahu alayhi wasallam) regarding the ghusl after menses.

He said: “Let one of you take her water and lotus leaves and clean herself well, then let her pour water over her head and rub it vigorously so that it will reach the roots of her hair. Then let her pour the water over herself, then take a piece of cloth scented with musk and purify herself.” Asma’ said: How should she purify herself? He said: “Subhaan-Allaah! Purify yourself with it.” ‘Aa’ishah said – as if she whispered it to her – Follow the traces of blood. (Bukhari)

You usually find Musk come in cubes like the above. You can the rub it and apply it on your skin for example your neck, or alternatively rub some onto a cloth and then apply it to your body.

6) Honey - The final product I want to share benefits about! I love honey. It so so amazing and incredibly beneficial for our health. Today, people are discovering that honey benefits the health as well as the skin. This is why many beauty blogs and articles will recommend honey to be used as an exfoliating mask and some even suggest it helps to grow healthy hair! There are that many benefits of this Sunnah product that I most probably will run out of room to share them with you all. So her is an article I found regarding its benefitshttp://www.mnn.com/health/fitness-well-being/stories/10-health-benefits-of-honey

In terms of its place in the Sunnah, we know that honey is a cure. Allah describes it in the Qur'an as a 'sign' for those who give thought. Honey offers incredible antiseptic, antioxidant and immune boosting property. Honey contains natural sugars, so recently I have replaced the sugr in my tea, with a teaspoon or two of honey. :)

If you want to hold a miracle in your hand then grab a pot of honey!

“There comes forth from their bellies, a drink of varying colour wherein is healing for
men. Verily, in this is indeed a sign for people who think. [16:69]

Honey and musk are both products that will also be used by the people of Paradise, subhanAllah. How amazing is that!

Other products I occasionally use that are not from the Sunnah but I find have benefits are:

- Lavender lotions - Most of the time I use olive oil but it if there is any lotion I'd recommend to those who like to apply it from time to time, then it is Lavender. Lavender is so therapeutic and in my opinion, a few sniffs, make you feel so much more relaxed and calmed. (Don't worry, its not a drug!)
- Baby Powder - Oh yeah, who said you have to be a baby to use baby powder? Some perfumes are seriously irritating and make me sneeze so bad, so, as a replacement I bought some baby powder, and you know - its awesome. :)

I really pray this post was beneficial. InshaAllah, this can be the first step we all take into implementing the Sunnah into other areas of our life.

If any of you are interested in some of the products I mentioned above, then give me a shout, as I know a sister who has set up her own business titled 'Sunnah Cures' and sells the above products are a relatively reasonable price!

[Note: Very rare do people have issues/reactions to such products, however there are always exceptions depending on every individual, so I advise a person tries out the products and if their body/skin is fine with it (99% will be) then definitely continue to use it. Generally, they work wonders, MashaAllah. :)]

Who Did Islam Liberate? [Psychology Gem]

In pre-islamic Arabia, the right of life was frequently denied to female children. The right to know the identity of the father was also neglected, and tribalism was the main value in society.
In the Roman civilisation, if a child was born sick or disabled, it was killed. If it was born healthy, the child would be placed at the feet of the 'pater familias' (father who had strict patriarchal authority). If he decided to keep the child, he would raise him up with his own hands, and if he didn't, he would abandon the child and leave it to die, or someone would pick it up and take it in as a slave.

And then came Islam.
In Islam, children and women were liberated. A child was given rights to the religion of the mother, to education, fairness, good name and identity. Parents were also elevated in terms of status and obedience, coming second after obedience to Allah and His Messenger.
Islam brought peace and harmony to the family, to society and to the entire world.
How then can one deny that Islam is the religion of truth?

A Change Of Heart [Memoir]

When I went for a check-up today, one of the medical practitioners greeted me and my mum and then turned to us with a confused expression. She said: "Sorry when I see people with the *waves her finger at our veils*, I don't know if they can speak English or not." She explained that ofcourse she respected that we wore it but always thought there would be a language barrier.
Me and my mum then explained that we could speak English (Alhamdulilah!) and that my mum even worked. She was startled.

As the appointment went on, one of the two practitioners randomly sparked up a discussion. She asked us about the veil and why we wore it. She asked me if I was studying and I told her yes and that I was studying Psychology. Again she was surprised. She asked what was our motive behind wearing the Niqab and how we felt about the current situation relating to Muslim women. Me and my mum gave her as much information as possible as well as personal experiences of why we chose to cover. She was amazed when she heard that Muslim women had so many rights!
Then, as most mum's do, my mum mentioned to her that I was writing a book and that it was in the process of being published. This time, she was taken aback!
A Muslim veiled woman can write a book?! Can't be true...
She was so excited and jotted down the name of the book as well as my name and told us she had read a couple of books on Islam and that she had teenage grandkids so wanted to give the book to them.
I was truly humbled, but was so taken aback myself. How many still have this perception that Muslim women are oppressed? How many people out there, hold good opinions about Muslims yet are made to think otherwise? She even admitted that today people are brainwashed in thinking Muslims are oppressed and are uneducated, subhanAllah.
I pray Allah guides her heart to Islam. I pray He allows us, especially the women of the Ummah, to truly represent Islam through our words and actions, and to educate ourself so we can educate the world and serve His deen, ameen.
If there is anything I or anyone can learn from this... its that there are good people out there, *yearning* to know the truth, so how are we going to go out there and protray it?

Penned thoughts [Quotes & Gems]

Hasan Al Basri said regarding those who love each other for the sake of Allah only; that they will be resurrected from their graves and will look for each other under the burning sun which will be so close to their necks on that hot day. They will hold hands and gather together, until they come under the throne of Allah to take its shade.
Love for the sake of Allah is indeed a beautiful thing.

Keep praying. If you really want something, He will make a way.

Be sincere in your aim, and you will find the help of Allah surrounding you. - Ibn Qayyim (rahimullah)

Give more than you take.
That's the principle for every relationship. Whether it's with your parents, friends, cousins, relatives, spouse, children or a complete stranger.
If everyone lived by this rule, there would be of surety more peace in the world.
Thus why in Islam, even a simple matter, such as the islamic greeting, is encouraged to be given in full, and the person who does so is rewarded more for their willingness to give more Du'aa, than the one who simply says the minimum.
How beautiful is Islam?
May Allah grant us the ability to give more for His sake, more of our time, our efforts, our love and our care, and may He use us to serve His deen, ameen

Even if the most darkest of situations, there is hope. There is a candle light awaiting to be lit. Keep walking, keep tiptoeing through the dark tunnels of your life, even if you trip and fall, then stand back up. Every cut and bruise is but a reminder that you have not, and will not, give up.
Keep dreaming and working towards your goals no matter how dark it gets, for there is one light which can always be lit - that is the light of hope.

"And in the last third (of the night), let your hopes (Du'aas) descend to the 7th heaven with the certainty that it will be answered."

Sometimes the test and trials others go through are a reflection of the Mercy of Allah towards us. Perhaps Allah reminds us to turn back to Him by allowing us to take lessons from another individuals situation. Isn't that a blessing in and of itself? ‪#‎BeGrateful‬ ‪#‎Alhamdulilah‬

His delays are not His denials. ‪#‎KeepPraying‬

"Do not scatter it, (the Qur'an) like inferior dates, and do not chant it quickly with poetry. Stop at its wonders, move the hearts with it, and let not your concern be the end of the Surah." - Abdullah Ibn Mas'ood

لله ملك السموات والأرض ، واستقرض منك حبة فبخلت بها ، وخلق سبعة أبحر وأحب منك دمعةً فقحطت عينك بها
To Allaah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, yet He asks a loan from you (i.e. giving charity) but you are stingy. He created the seven seas, but He loved a tear from you (out of fear of Him) but  your eyes were tearless.

"The success of building a Qur'anic generation from our children is almost completely dependent on the mothers educating themselves as much as humanly possible on the Qur'an and Sunnah before marriage, and then utter devotion to them after marriage." - Abu Easa Niamatullah

If you want to measure a person's Akhlaaq when selecting a spouse, then look at the way he treats his mother. If he respects her, he will respect you. If he disrespects her, he will disrespect you.

The flowers a bee travels to are very far from the hive. So sometimes a bee may travel miles to reach the flowers to get its Rizq. When it returns to the hive which is shared with a whole community of bees, Allah teaches the bee to do a little movement called 'The Bee Dance.' It is taught to hover in the air in order to teach and navigate all the other bees to the direction of the flowers so they can also get Rizq.
The bee teaches us that when we benefit others, we're all benefiting ourselves. If we're doing well we must also help others to do well also, as this will strengthen our community and relationships. How many of us hate to see others do well? Let's change this. Let's be like the wise bee.

Fatima cried when Rasulullah (salallahu alayhi wasallam) was on his deathbed. Scholars say that the reason for this was because every time Fatima would walk into the room, her father would get up, greet her, hug her and kiss her forehead, but now as she saw him, she cried, because he physically couldn't get up to greet her due to his Illness.

Muwatta of Imam Malik: "O my son, accompany the scholars, because Allah will revive your hearts with the wisdom of the scholars like He revives the land with water from the heavens."

Follow the 21 theory when raising your children.
First 7 years - Play with them.
Second 7 years - Teach them Halaal and Haraam and all rules and regulations.
Third 7 years - Be their friend!

Honour your parents. It's a gift. Kiss the hand that held you, fed you and clothed you when you were young and weak. ~ Sh Alaa El Sayed
LikeAccording to Al Suyuti teaching the Qur'an is among the foundation of rasing your children.
Ibn Khaldun said 'it is among the banners that must be raised when raising your children.'
Ibn Sina said, it's the best way to teach them Arabic and the meaning of Qur'an.

What legacy are you going to leave? At least leave righteous children.
"And those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith - We will join with them their descendants, and We will not deprive them of anything of their deeds. Every person, for what he earned, is retained." [52:21]

The first thing you need to teach your children is Tawhid. Teach them Surah Ikhlaas and Kaafiroon, and teach them the most easiest words on the tongue - Laa Ilaha Illaa Allah. ~ Sh Alaa El Sayed

4 attributes to look for in a husband:
1) Qawiyy - strong physically; emotionally, strong in deen, in influence, in intellect.
2) Amin - Trusworthy. Someone who takes care of his Amanah (trust).
3) Huluq - Beautiful character and manners. In the way he talks, walks, disposition and in his reputation
4) Deen - Religion is sound, pure and strong.

There is a difference between a man and a father. A father is a Qawwam (maintainter; leader). He is responsible for those under His care.
When Allah spoke to Adam and Hawa He spoke in dual tense, but He held only one person accountable - Adam (as). Be a man, take responsibility.

We so often say to our children "When I was your age..."
Dont do this! Children will not relate and will turn you away.
Be a dreammaker for your child. Support them and empower them. Remember they live in a time which is different to yours, so help them overcome the obstacles of that time. ~ Sh Alaa El Sayed

"Children are a gladtidings, a comfort to the eyes, a means of affection and mercy, and an adornment of life." ~ Sh Alaa El Sayed

Mothers. <3
Their every tear, every smile, every heart break, ever joy makes them more beautiful and stronger in our eyes...every single time.
O Allah, have mercy on our mothers, preserve them, protect them, and grant them the highest stations of Al-Firdaus, ameen.

Allah sends certain people into your life in order to teach you a lesson or to inspire you; and then He makes them leave. Remember to always keep those people in your Du'aa, for they touched your lives and especially your heart

رزقك الله بالنعم من غير ان تطلبه، فكيف تعتقد انه لايقدر ان يرزقك ما تطلبه

not capable of gifting you with that which you do ask for?

When the youth turn back to Allah, Allah makes the world submit to them. The youth of Surah Kahf made huge sacrifices for their religion, in turn, Allah guided them through impossible odds.

Be like a bee, who seeks out the best flower. It doesn't settle for less. Rather, it continues to travel through the spectrum of flowers, till it reaches the one which is pure, untouched, and one whose perfume is still fresh.
Be like a bee, who gives more than it takes. It will not eat from the flower until it has given it more than it has taken, and even when it does take, it acts delicately and softly, as to not ruin the petals or cause them to break.
Be like a bee, who doesn't take the food of another bee, because it recognises that Allah's provision is vast. It moves onto a better place out of respect for its fellow bee and out of knowledge that Allah is the Most Bountiful; the one who provides.
Be like a bee. :)

One of the Salaf, al Imām Fudayl bin Iyād (رضي الله عنه) said,
“I learned patience from a small boy. On my way to the Masjid one day, I came across a woman beating her son at home. As he was yelling and screaming, he managed to open the door and flee. So his mother locked the door on him. When I returned from the Masjid, I found the boy after having cried and wept sleeping at the door of his home longing for his mother. So his mother’s heart softened and she opened the door for him.” Upon witnessing that, Fudayl bin Iyād cried until his beard became wet with tears, and then he said “SubhānAllāh! If only the servant was to be patient at the door of Allāh, Allāh would surely open it!" [Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah (6/22)]

The first person to accept Islam was, a woman.
The first person to die for Islam was, a woman.
The greatest scholar of Islam was, a woman.
The person who loved the Prophet (salallahu alayhi wasallam) the most, was a woman.
One of the greatest fighters in Islam, was a woman.

And you call us oppressed?

Raising a child with the correct Tarbiyyah is like planting a seed. Through constant care, love and nurturing, the seed will blossom into a beautiful flower, leaving a scent for others to follow.
Similarly, constant love, care and correct nurturing of a child, will cause the child to grow up to become a beautiful individual, a coolness of your eyes, and also a beacon of light for others to follow.

Hey, blogger! Just a few thoughts...

Assalaamu alaykum, humans of the earth!

Wow, its been a pretty long time since I've actually sat down to write a post for my blog. It feels good to be back and writing again, Alhamdulilah. Having said that... I've really missed blogger, and you all!

Well, where do I start? It's been a pretty busy few months actually. Ramadhan ended *sad face* and then school/work started for the rest of the family, I also began my first semester of Univeristy. Yes, I'm finally out of school. (Woop woop!) Although, I must admit, I do miss college days. You can't beat school lunches, free lessons and entertaining teachers. Nevertheless, it's also rather fun studying a degree from the comfort of your own home, Alhamdulilah. I was doubtful of whether or not I would actually enjoy studying from home, but at the moment, although so much of my time is spent watching lectures and making notes, I'm actually quite enjoying it! [Sidenote: I really miss my school's curly fries with pizza though.]

So, I just wanted to share a few thoughts on Tawakkul. I've noticed many of my posts have a recurring theme of Du'aa, hope, tawakkul etc, which has kind of taught me that there are so many things in life we may never understand, and that is why we have to place our trust in Allah, all the time, in every situation.

In life, we are all seeking different things. Whether its to settle in a different country, study abroad, establish a career or  raise a family. All of these things can be turned into 'Ibaadah if we have the right intention and mindset. These aspirations we have, are not necessarily bad or evil things, but good, lofty and ambitious dreams which give us motivation, drive and excitement. Moreover, these things are those which give us butterflies and cause us to smile when we think the moment we get to pursue them or reach them.

However, sometimes life can become challenging. We are tested in certain ways, through different things. For example, you may be seeking a righteous husband, someone who can support and help you in your religion, you pray hard tireless day and night, and then eventually someone comes along who fits the criteria, who ticks all of your boxes, yet after countless istikhaarah, something pops up and it never works out. You're left feeling heartbroken, confused, and your levels of hope begin to decrease, you begin to think of all the other ways it could possibly work out, but then after going round in circles so many times, you give up.  Other times, you may apply for a particular job to help in building your career, or you may apply for a particular course to study here or abroad, but nothing really works out, or you are rejected due to something so minor and insignificant. You think about the reasons why you may have been rejected and begin to feel unworthy.

This is when Tawakkul comes in. Trusting in Allah is a beautiful thing to do. It requires you to set aside your desires and plans, and place your trust in the One who has a better plan for you. When you rely on Allah, it doesn't mean you give up. No, it means you try harder, you work everyday, you raise your hands in Du'aa, but you do it with complete faith in Allah. It also means, you have hope. You don't stop at the first hurdle.

That proposal that never worked out may seem the worst thing ever, but now that you have Tawaakul you begin to believe, that He does have someone better for you. Tawakkul reignites in us, feelings of  positivity. Its about replacing your 'ifs' and 'buts' with words of contentment, and replacing the words 'may', 'might' and 'could' with 'will' and 'inshaAllah.'

This is relying upon Allah and being certain for an answer. An answer you may have not originally liked, but one that is good for you in both worlds. It is to acknowledge that if things didn't work out, then there is good in that, and that there will be something better than it.

Shaytaan is going to do his best to pull you down. Trust me. He will try every attempt to make you lose hope after the first stumble, he will whisper all he can to make you feel like all your plans are failures, he will come to you when your making Du'aa, and he will remind you of everything that could possible break your spirit and shatter your faith...but don't let him.

If you have stumbled at the first block, if barriers were put in place at the first time, if you didn't get what you wanted at the first attempt, know, that it doesn't stop there. Keep going, keep dreaming, keep holding high ambitions, but do so with a heart that is filled with certainty and belief in Allah.

As Allah says:

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “Allah the Most High said, ‘I am as My servant thinks (expects) I am. I am with him when he mentions Me. If he mentions Me to himself, I mention him to Myself; and if he mentions Me in an assembly, I mention him in an assembly greater than it. If he draws near to Me a hand’s length, I draw near to him an arm’s length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed.’ [Sahih Al-Bukhari]
Expect good things from Allah. Expect that He will land you in a job which will be good for your dunya and akhirah. Expect that He will grant you a spouse when He knows is the right time and to the right person, and expect that He will help you reach your goals. Just have patience, continue to make Du'aa, have trust in His Qadr, and watch the amazing things He will do for you. Subhanahu wa ta'aala.

Recently, I've noticed my level of enthusiasm and passion slowly begin to decrease, and the whispers of shaytaan begin to rise, but then, I sought refuge in Allah and changed my attitude to one of positivity and vibrance. I cam across an extremely beautiful quote which increased my levels of hope and reminded to keep going no matter how many times I thought I failed. :)

"And in the last third (of the night), let your hopes (Du'aas) descend to the 7th heaven with the certainty that it will be answered."

May Allah give us the ability to trust in Him. May He place barakah in our goals and ambitious and allow us to pursue them for His sake. May He grant us the best in this world and the next and save us from the hellfire, ameen.
